about

I've been playing music for decades, and writing songs all along. So why did it take me until age 66 to get an album out? Let's just say I was...uh...navigating life.

"Doug Baker takes listeners all over the map on his new album, Navigating Life. A couple of pandemic-inspired tracks show the ups and downs of life in lockdown. In “Introvert Heaven,” “Life is damn near perfect, I don’t even have to put on pants.” But in “Out of the House,” he sings, “Lordamighty, I gotta get out.” The album ranges far and wide musically, as well, from a Georgia Satellites-style rocker to a pretty piano ballad. Many of the songs have a quirky, lighthearted touch reminiscent of John Prine and Loudon Wainwright III. Baker writes about North Carolina’s most notorious arsenic poisoner in one (“All About Blanche”) and the joys of autumnal romance in another (“What Does Love Look Like Now”). He ties it all together with his lovely fingerstyle picking on acoustic guitar."
- Eddie Huffman, author of "John Prine, In Spite of Himself"
